Saudi Aramco

Former Director of the Israel Missile Defence Organisation Uzi Rubin has revealed in an interview with the Defence News media outlet that Saudi air defences, namely Patriot systems, failed to repel the combined drone and missile attack on the country’s oil facilities in September due to the aerial assailants flying below the horizon. According to him, the defences were not prepared to detect such targets.

“When it comes to missiles, missile defence sensors will aim above the horizon because the missile is above it and you don’t want clutter. So when it comes to guarding, the issue is things that can sneak in near the ground”, he said.

Rubin said that it’s difficult to close this radar “gap”, through which low-flying objects can slip, but not impossible. He added that all the Saudis need to do is establish proper local defences.

He elaborated that no “fancy” systems are needed for this and that the quite simple and battle-proven Russian Pantsir S1 (NATO reporting name SA-22 Greyhound) systems with dual 2A38M 30 millimetre automatic cannons equipped with infrared direction finders would do the trick. Russia has been successfully using Pantsirs to repel frequent massive drone attacks on its Hmeymim base in Syria carried out by local militant groups.

Although there is no indication that Riyadh has discussed purchasing Pantsirs from Russia, it did discuss the possibility of buying Russian S-400 air defence systems in 2018, which possess certain advantages when compared with the American Patriots.

However, recent events involving Turkey and India have shown that such a purchase could spark a negative reaction from Saudi Arabia’s long-time ally, Washington, which has already threatened New Delhi and Ankara with sanctions over their acquisition of S-400s.

In light of the 14 September attacks, which crippled Saudi Aramco’s oil refineries and halved the country’s daily crude output, the Pentagon announced the deployment of an additional Patriot battery to the Middle Eastern ally’s territory. The decision comes despite two such batteries failing to foil the combined drone-missile attack, the responsibility for which has been claimed by Yemen’s Houthis.

Yup, so KSA gets systems IDF knows how to destroy if ever KSA becomes aggressive towards Israel… +++ “for useless American Patriot systems” => At the present day, Patriot has made hundreds of interceptions… Let’s look at Syria : there are S-75, S-125, S-200, Buk, OSA, Pantsir and S-300… How many aircraft shot down since the end of the Kippur war? Seems to me it’s… 1… Everybody violates Syrian airspace at will, even the Turks… S-300’s 1st version was introduced in 1978… Still zero interceptions, and S-400 is in fact a re-naming of S-300PMU-3. A Russian general bragged about Pantsir… Read more »

I do think the Russians have shown they can play a bad hand of cards well whether it be diplomatically, economically, or military. I would say their military systems may not be the best with all the bells and missiles and perhaps not as efficient / long legged compare to American and some European equipment. However, the Russians do design their systems for a particular task and they are meant to work in less than ideal conditions (See their Soyus transport rocket working with a leaking hole getting to the Space Station!). Sometimes that’s all you need….

Agree. Was it on RT today they tested the ability of their AK74 is it. On full auto mag after mag until it got so hot the plastic finally went on fire and a casing expanded and seized completely in the barrel. A quick clean of moving parts and a check of the barrel which may have needed changing and it would be ready to go again. The old AK was always a solid weapon’ The SKS I always thought was a brilliant peasants weapon , semi auto and breech stayed open when empty and clips for a quick reload. Simple… Read more »

German Cheetah systems that KSA wanted to buy years ago would have closed the gap. Not only Russian systems can do so.

Germany did not enter war since 1945.Cheetah was for accompanying tanks. Like Russian shilka. MANTIS NBS C-RAM. Its stationary successor in German forces has seen action.

Cheetah = vehicle mounted Oerlikon Skyguard, so, if the German Cheetahs didn’t went to war, their gun system is more than battle tested
